Malaysia’s newly installed Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday said his government would “respect all agreements” even as it reviewed the viability of Chinese-linked projects in the country. His predecessor Najib Razak stepped up ties with China in the last few years of his nine-year tenure as premier. Mahathir has sounded a pessimistic tone on the viability of one of the the 55 billion ringgit East Coast Rail Link major projects signed during Najib’s bilateral visit to Beijing in 2016. The new Malaysian government will review all foreign contracts and projects, including the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project and those under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Mahathir has opposed the HSR before, citing the debt Malaysia would have to take on.
