Malaysia’s anti-corruption watchdog, the MACC, says it is “shocked” by the Penang High Court’s decision of acquitting Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and businesswoman Phang Li Koon from corruption charges, saying that the decision was made by the Attorney General’s Office and not by the MACC. Speaking at a press conference in Brunei on Monday, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was asked to comment on the MACC statement, to which he said “I am also shocked”, but added that the AG should have had informed the MACC about its plan to drop the charges.  The Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) has expressed “extreme surprise” at the Court’s decision, saying that it underscored the need for clarification over the initial charge against Guan Eng, the New Straits Times reports.
