Malaysia’s parliament on Thursday repealed a law against “fake news” introduced this year by the administration of former prime minister Najib Razak. Parliament debated a motion to repeal the law for about three hours before passing it by a simple voice vote, Reuters reports. A Malaysian court convicted a Danish citizen, Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman, in April over inaccurate criticism of police on social media, the first person to be prosecuted under the law against fake news, The Guardian reported. Critics said the law, which was passed in April, was meant to silence dissent ahead to the general election as then-prime minister Najib Razak was dogged by a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal involving an indebted state fund.
