Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is putting safeguards in place to prevent corruption in Malaysia by requiring his cabinet declare their wealth and refuse gifts more valuable than perishable food and flowers, Bloomberg reports. Previously, the prime minister said that the days of top executives of government-linked companies (GLCs) drawing fat salaries – regardless of their companies’ performance – are over. He said what happened in the past was that the government “found it convenient” to place its supporters in these GLCs, Channel News Asia reports. The statesman, who became Malaysia’s seventh prime minister after Pakatan Harapan won the last 14th General Election, celebrated his 93rd birthday on Tuesday, with social media users coming out in full force to celebrate the occasion with him on the Internet.
