Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says that he cannot give any guarantee on the people picked to be his successor. He could only promise that Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Anwar Ibrahim will take over when he resigns as prime minister, The Star reports. Anwar was sworn-in as lawmaker on Oct 15 after the 71-year-old won by-election in the town of Port Dickson, sealing his return to politics. Anwar served as Mahathir’s deputy from 1993 to 1998, but was sacked and eventually arrested and jailed on disputed charges of sodomy and corruption. In September, Channel News Asia quoted Anwar as saying that he was incapable of refuting all negative assumptions and rumors regarding his relationship with Mahathir, but called for support for the current prime minister.
