Malaysia’s cabinet has approved legal amendments that will allow college and university students to participate in political activities on campus, The Star reports. The cabinet on Saturday approved amendments to the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971, which has been infamous for curtailing students’ questioning of politicians. Students have long campaigned for a repeal of the UUCA which effectively bars them from joining political parties and trade unions, saying the ban violates human rights and free speech. Following the amendment, activist group Fortify Rights has made recommendations for universities to immediately drop all proceedings against university students facing disciplinary action for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.
