The 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Indonesia was celebrated with a large event held in Jakarta on Friday night. On Jan. 20, 1958, Japan and Indonesia signed a World War II peace treaty and established diplomatic relations. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe exchanged congratulatory messages with President Joko Widodo. In his message, Prime Minister Abe mentions the progress between the two countries in a wide range of fields such as economy, disaster risk reduction and people-to-people exchanges, and expresses his hope for further advancement of the bilateral relations on the occasion of this milestone year. The two countries began modern diplomatic and economic relations in 1958, and have since seen trade ties expand enormously.  In commemorating the 60th diplomatic anniversary with Indonesia, Japan has indicated it is ready to invest more than Rp200 trillion (US$15 billion) in support of the country’s infrastructure projects.
