Cyclone Senyar illuminated the vulnerabilities of
Indonesia’s land governance, where a long-standing
prioritization of economic objectives has eroded
ecological resilience. Yet as the climate crisis starts
striking closer to home, Indonesia needs to start considering ecological resilience as integral, not
separate, to its economy. Addressing these
vulnerabilities requires a shift towards active
mitigation, incentivizing conservation through
economic instruments and lowering barriers to
participation. Through these mechanisms, Indonesia
can pursue both conservation and commerce to
stimulate long-term growth in non-extractive, market
