The government has said it will stick to its current mobility restrictions during the year-end holidays, despite having recently reported the country’s first known case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, who leads the government’s COVID-19 response in Java and Bali, cited the country’s relatively stable COVID-19 situation and high vaccination rate as the reasons behind the decision. On Dec. 9, the government announced new, more relaxed curbs for the year-end holidays, which are expected to be enforced from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2, 2022. Masdalina Pane of the Indonesian Epidemiologists Association said the combination of the vaccination rollout, increased testing and a lower number of cases put the country in a better position to deal with the anticipated increase in year-end mobility. She said the Omicron variant was more likely to cause a third wave of cases than an uptick in public mobility because it was expected to be more transmissible than Delta. Read more at:
