Indonesia launched a new cyber security agency on Wednesday as the world’s biggest Muslim majority country moves to tackle online religious extremism and a flood of fake news on social media. The country’s Communications Ministry has blocked 11 Islamic websites deemed to have spread ethnic, religious and racial tensions. They also arranged a meeting with representatives from Facebook to discuss inaccurate reporting on the highly-popular social media platform. Google and Facebook have launched applications to ward off hoaxes and other online watchdog groups try to fact-check these stories through crowdsourcing.
