Police in Indonesia’s restive province of Papua have detained a Pole suspected of working as a journalist to cover issues related to illegal activity, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Thursday, Channel News Asia reports. The 39-year-old Jakub Fabian Skrzypski has been held for several days without formal legal representation, according to the Associated Press. Police and military reports obtained by the news agency say Skrypski was in contact with five Papuans found with ammunition, who were detained shortly before his arrest. Amnesty International said in July that Indonesia’s police and military are responsible for at least 95 unlawful killings in Papua since 2010. These killings occur mainly in the context of unnecessary or excessive use of force during mass protests.
