Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has decided to keep the current price cap on domestic thermal coal procurement and is against revoking the domestic market obligation policy, S&P Global Platts reported Tuesday, quoting Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignatius Jonan. Previously, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut B. Pandjaitan said the government was seeking to boost coal exports and increase foreign exchange earnings by scrapping the obligation on coal producers to supply domestic power stations. Such a move, he argued, would lower Indonesia’s current account deficit and ease the pressure on the rupiah. With the plan no longer on the table, President Joko Widodo is expected to revise a presidential decree that will widen the mandatory use of biodiesel in the domestic market in a bid to achieve $5.5 billion reduction of fuel imports.
