Indonesia’s anti-graft agency has arrested seven people, including a senior executive of palm oil firm Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology, in connection with a bribery case, an official at the agency said on Sunday, Reuters reports. Indonesia is a country that is rich in natural resources, with revenues mostly channelled to a small economic elite. Collusion between the economic and politic elites is rampant. The corrupt sell-off of land and resources by politicians, often to raise money for expensive political campaigns, is a major driver of Indonesia’s deforestation and land rights crisis, according to The Gecko Project. The campaign period for the 2019 presidential and legislative elections officially kicked off in August, as election participants signed a declaration pledging a “peaceful campaign”.
