Malaysia is reviewing the national automotive policy, which may include imposing conditions on the import of foreign vehicles, The Star Online reports. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday that while Malaysia agrees with the practice of free trade, other countries worldwide impose conditions for their own markets. Previously, Mahathir voiced his disappointment over the mostly negative response towards his initiative for a new national car. He argued that protectionist policies in Japan and Korea had benefitted the development of high-quality cars within these countries. In response to Mahathir, Malaysian Automotive Association president Aishah Ahmad said that limiting the access of foreign cars to the local market is a regressive move for the country’s auto industry.
