Two years after the Philippines won a major legal victory against China at The Hague, President Rodrigo Duterte is coming under pressure to wield the ruling in its South China Sea disputes and to discard what many see as a weak-kneed approach, Nikkei Asian Review reports. In Manila and other cities today, residents woke up to red banners hanging from footbridges reading, “Welcome to the Philippines, province of China,” complete with the Chinese flag and Chinese characters, Quartz reports. The banners highlight what many consider the failure of president Rodrigo Duterte to assert the nation’s rights in the disputed waters. Under Duterte, who took office in 2016, the Philippines has toned down its rhetoric towards China on the dispute. In April, he publicly declared that he “loved” Chinese President Xi Jinping, CNN reports.
