Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday sought to dispel concerns he will cling to power and become a dictator, saying he wants to achieve his goal of introducing federalism so that he can finish his term early. Beyond his violent drug war, some of the legacies of Duterte’s presidency is likely to include infrastructure development, which is currently progressing at a pace never been seen since the time of Ferdinand Marcos. Over the next decade, the government is set to embark on an ambitious $180 billion infrastructure spending bonanza. In November of 2016, Duterte ordered a clandestine hero’s burial for Ferdinand Marcos. Duterte, who openly idolises Marcos and claims close ties to his family, skipped Sunday’s commemoration as he did last year, leaving only a media statement calling for “unity and solidarity”.
