Statistics recorded by the Traffic Control and Investigation Department (JSKLL) of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) reveal out of 15 accident cases involving the loss of life throughout January to September 2018, 10 involved youth aged between 18 and 38, said Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Iswandy bin Ahmad in his capacity as the Brunei National Road Safety Council (BNRSC) Ambassador.
“The sad fact is there are still those who refuse to wear seatbelts while driving,” Yang Berhormat Iswandy said.
He made these comments when the BNRSC through its youth outreach program yesterday continued its road safety roadshow at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), targetting university students. A number of booths and activities were set up during the roadshow. Also present were Secretariat officers and staff of BNRSC and the Ministry of Communications. The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah.
The LegCo member urged UTB students to encourage and remind family members as well as themselves to always wear seatbelts.
“Having a driver’s licence does not mean you are invincible against accidents, and no matter how safe your car is, you have a higher risk of sustaining injuries when you are not driving within the speed limit and not wearing a seatbelt,” added Yang Berhormat Iswandy.
Yang Berhormat Iswandy visited the exhibition booths during the roadshow.
The program is an objective of the BNRSC targetting road safety testing for youth who have a driver’s licence.
The event is also supported by BNRSC strategic partners comprising Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd (BSP), Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd, Autoimagination Services and Maju Motors Sdn Bhd.
Also exhibited during the youth outreach program were aspects that can give a closer look at things that may affect safe driving such as the ‘Seatbelt Convincer’ that gives users immediate experience about the risks of wearing and not wearing a seatbelt while driving or being a passenger of a vehicle, an ‘online simulator test’ that shows the effectiveness of driving while using a mobile phone, a Vehicle Check Compliance that shows the standards and importance of children’s seat in a vehicle, GARDS from BSP which is a road risk assessment, an ‘In-Vehicle Monitoring System’ (IVMS) that encourages improvement in good conduct of driving through specified guidelines, Fatigue Management that provides estimates of sleep and the effects on driving.
Meanwhile, through the Megamas Training Company, a drunk goggle display depicts effects of being drunk as well as drunk driving, and tips for safe driving. In addition to DUI (Driving Under Influence), it also shared about defensive driving, tips and awareness on driving and disturbances while driving.
