Australia’s treasurer has hit back at Mahathir Mohamad’s warning that Australia’s plan to move its embassy in Israel could add to terrorism, by citing a history of anti-Semitic remarks by the Malaysian prime minister, The Guardian reports. Known for his outspoken public interventions, Mahathir raised concern at a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the ASEAN summit in Singapore last week about the prospect of Australia recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. A decision is slated for December, according to Morrison, as Indonesia threatens to delay a trade deal with Australia. Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said it was critical to land a free trade deal with Indonesia to buttress economic growth and also to strengthen the ASEAN grouping “and the balance that exists strategically within our region.”
