The Philippines is planning to take President Rodrigo Duterte’s ferocious drugs war to schools with the inspection of bags and lockers, as well as random testing for teachers, to curb demand for illegal substances, officials said, as quoted by Reuters. Previously, Duterte vowed to give free guns to members of the public — so long as they promise to use them to fight drugs and crime. The president said he was considering arming 42,000 community leaders, known as barangay captains, after consulting with the police and intelligence agency. More than 4,200 suspected drug dealers have been killed by police in Duterte’s anti-narcotics campaign since June 2016, as well as several thousand more by unknown gunmen who authorities have described as vigilantes, or rival gang members.
