Vietnamese police broke up an online football gambling ring worth around US$26 million, arresting four people as authorities looked to stop black market betting that surges during sporting events like the ongoing World Cup, The Straits Times reports, quoting a local media. The arrest came only a few days after Vietnam’s National Assembly on June 14 approved a new law that allows locals to bet on soccer matches held overseas, as the World Cup 2018 kicked off in Russia on the same day. As part of the pilot plan to generate national revenue, casinos will open their gates to Vietnamese, and betting on horse and dog races, as well as soccer matches, will become legal, according to Bloomberg. As of now, only foreigners are allowed to gamble in Vietnam.
