Malaysia is trying to seek the return of fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, from China using what Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad described as “private efforts“, according to The Star. Tom Wright, the co-author of Billion Dollar Whale, has speculated that Jho Low continues to “move freely” in mainland China because he has detailed knowledge of major infrastructure deals involving Chinese firms, Malaysia Kini reports. After Mahathir’s victory over Najib in the general election in May, the new Malaysian government suspended US$22 billion of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects that Najib had endorsed, saying they were too expensive and that Malaysia’s national debt had ballooned.
