What is the Indonesian government hiding in Papua? That’s the question raised by Human Rights Watch deputy director Phelim Kline in a blog post over Indonesia’s “seeming refusal” to make good on an official invitation promised to the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, to visit Papua and West Papua provinces. Indonesia has criticized the high commissioner, saying that his regional office in Bangkok should first coordinate with the government before sending a mission to Papua, instead of demanding immediate access. Over the decades, widespread criticism of the Indonesian government’s human rights record in the Papua region has become commonplace. Pro-independence activists have been tortured, murdered, or have gone missing, with no arrests or prosecutions carried out, writes Arief Subhan for The ASEAN Post.
