Indonesia has been hit by forest fires again. It responded by sending helicopters to extinguish the fires, ahead of the Asian Games which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang in South Sumatra next month, Straits Times reports. The Pekanbaru Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported on Tuesday that satellite readings showed the 29 hotspots were in Riau. The head of Riau Disaster Mitigation Agency, Edwar Sanger, said that his agency was working hard to keep Riau free of haze to make the Asian Games a success. Hundreds of hectares of forests are reported to be still on fire in Riau province in Sumatra, believed to be due to the hot weather and open burning for agricultural purposes. These fires were reported as far back as June.
