A Chinese espionage group with suspected government links targeted the computers of Cambodian government agencies and opposition figures in a hacking campaign ahead of elections this month, according to Silicon Valley-based firm FireEye said in a report released Tuesday. Benjamin Read, FireEye’s senior manager for cyber espionage analysis, believes the Chinese group managed to gain widespread visibility into Cambodia’s elections and government operations, ABC reports. Read says his firm has only uncovered evidence of Chinese intelligence gathering, rather than election interference, but believes the activity is disturbing nevertheless. The new revelations are a sign that the Chinese espionage group is expanding operations beyond its usual targets, which have included defense and maritime organizations in the U.S. and Europe, writes Morgan Chalfant for The Hill.
