After being on the sidelines for years, the only son of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has decided to formally join Thailand’s main opposition party Puea Thai, The Straits Times reports. The election, slated to be held in February, is again expected to pit Thaksin’s “red shirt” followers against the military and royalist establishment, which seized power in successive coups in 2006 and 2014, according to Channel News Asia. Relatives and allies of ousted Thai premiers Thaksin and his sister, Yingluck, formed a new political party in November as part of a strategy to win more seats. Members of the new Thai Raksa Chart Party include Thaksin and Yingluck’s nephew and niece, close aides, and the younger generation of the clan’s political allies.
