Thailand’s Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai has denounced a media columnist’s idea to deny junta-run Thailand the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), calling it senseless for its failure to understand the intricacies of the topic at hand, The Nation reports. The column, written by the senior editor of The Jakarta Post, Kornelius Purba, last week, argues that ASEAN would unnecessarily humiliate itself in front of the global community if the regional grouping introduces Thai Prime Minister Prayuth as the chairman next year. Thailand plans to have an election next year and Prime Minister Prayuth has hinted that he might accept an invitation to be on a political party’s list of nominees to become prime minister after an election if he feels there is enough support, The Bangkok Post reports. He also made it clear that he has not yet made a decision about his political future.
