The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore has reported a 31.6% increase in arrests for harboring or hiring immigration offenders in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This surge highlights growing concerns about individuals overstaying their visas and working illegally in Singapore. From Jan. to Sep. 2024, 166 individuals were arrested for providing lodging to immigration offenders, while 138 were apprehended for employing them. Most of those arrested were Singaporeans.
In comparison, 231 individuals were arrested for similar offenses during the same period in 2023, according to the ICA. The majority of immigration offenders had overstayed after their work passes expired or were canceled, with some continuing to work illegally. The ICA conducts about 60 intelligence-led operations monthly to address overstaying and related offenses, with many cases uncovered through public tip-offs and agency investigations. Inspector Mark Chai, deputy officer-in-charge of ICA’s intelligence division, warned of potential security risks associated with unchecked immigration offenders, noting their involvement in illicit activities such as smuggling contraband or engaging in illegal labor, The Strait Times reported. Those found guilty of harboring or employing immigration offenders in Singapore face up to 24 months in jail, fines of up to SG$6,000 (US$4,450), or both. Read more at:
