The total number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh has soared to an estimated 900,000 as the UN opened a major fundraising conference on Monday aimed at securing hundreds of millions of dollars aid groups say is needed to care for Myanmar’s Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The country’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Shameem Ahsan, told the UN conference that the situation was “untenable”. Reuters reported that returning refugees are unlikely to be able to reclaim their land and may find their crops have been harvested and sold by the Myanmar government.
