Popular Bandung mayor Ridwan Kamil is poised to be the next governor of West Java, according to quick counts of votes from regional polls in Indonesia on Wednesday, The Straits Times reports. A victory for Mr Ridwan, will be seen as a boost for President Joko Widodo’s re-election bid. Back in 2014, when Widodo was the outsider, he lost the province to his challenger, former special forces, or Kopassus, general and Suharto’s son-in-law, Prabowo Subianto by a staggering 19 per cent margin. The province is widely known as a religiously conservative region, according to The Jakarta Post. It is where most of the Islam-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) supporters are. Nevertheless, the region is now controlled by Widodo’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and Prabowo’s Gerindra Party.
