Two Reuters journalists who uncovered a massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have been charged with violating the Official Secrets Act. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were charged with allegedly illegally possessing state secrets in government documents and face up to 14 years in prison if convicted, The Guardian reports. The court’s decision, in what has become a landmark press freedom case in Myanmar, drew global attention and prompted renewed calls for the reporters’ release. Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler called the case against the reporters “baseless”. Last month, military personnel threatened to charge Myanmar Now reporters under the Official Secrets Act and asked them to promise not to disclose to the media their brief detention while reporting on the alleged recruitment of a disabled child soldier, according to The Irrawady.
