The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Wednesday it is yet to complete the tedious process of delisting the names of deceased voters with a little over a month left before the May 9 national elections. Republic Act 8189 or the “Voter’s Registration Act of 1996” states that registration records of those who have died, as certified by the local civil registrar, shall be canceled. “The Comelec continues to delete the names of dead voters based on the list submitted by the local civil registrars,” Commissioner George Garcia said. Garcia explained that the requirement that the Comelec could not remove a voter’s name without a certification from the local civil registrar slows down the process.:As mandated by law, the civil registrar’s office must issue a death certificate to enable the Comelec to legally delete from its voters’ list the name of deceased voters. Comelec spokesman James Jimenez, saying that a lot of registered voters who have died from Covid-19 were still on the list. March 28 data from the Department of Health said that a total of 59,030 Filipinos have died due to Covid-19. Jimenez cautioned that this could affect the credibility of the polls, thus the need to remove the deceased from the voters’ list.
