The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) temporarily closed several border gates, including the Laiza gate, in areas under its control along the China-Myanmar border. A source close to the KIO confirmed the closures, which have been in effect since 11 November 2024, following ongoing tensions and China’s restrictions on border trade. “There are no negotiations at the moment. The gates remain closed on our side,” said a source familiar with the KIO government’s decision. China previously shut down trade gates in areas controlled by revolutionary forces, but recent attempts have been made to reopen key crossings, including the Kanpaikti, Lweje, and Panwa gates.

Local sources indicate that while the KIO government has closed these gates, Chinese authorities have also maintained restrictions, particularly at Panwa, where KIO immigration officers and police are now stationed following its recent seizure. The KIO has reportedly begun implementing administrative measures in Panwa and Lweje, both of which are now under its control. Lweje was captured by KIO forces in April, while Panwa was taken earlier this month.

China has tightened border restrictions since October, citing warnings to the KIO and Northern Alliance forces who are engaged in battles against the Myanmar junta to cease hostilities. Trade along the Kachin border has been significantly affected, with exports of gems, jewelry, rare earths, rice, beans, sesame, and fruits to China now disrupted. Read more at:
