Malaysia’s deputy prime minister on Tuesday said Kuala Lumpur was in talks with Thailand over the fate of 11 Uighur Muslims held in the country after escaping from a Thai detention center last year – among a group of 20 ethnic Uighur Muslims from China after digging holes in the wall and using blankets as ladders. The 20 were part of the last remaining group of more than 200 Uighurs who were detained in 2014. Earlier this month, The United States expressed concerns over Malaysia’s possible deportation of 11 Uighur Muslims to China, while Human Rights Watch has called on Malaysia to ensure the detained Uighurs are not forcibly deported to China as they face “credible threats of imprisonment and torture”.
