A disturbing report released Tuesday by the United Nations’ Children’s Fund (UNICEF) revealed that 40 percent of children under the age of five in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are malnourished, despite those countries’ growing economies and rapidly declining poverty rates. This is considerably higher than the global average of 1 in 3 children, which is significant when one considers that the average includes large impoverished populations in African and other Asian countries.
