Indonesia has long aspired to be a global manufacturing and investment destination and is pursuing a series of industrial policies to encourage domestic production. When the country banned iPhone 16 sales, Apple reportedly offered US$1 billion in investments – a result that might seem to validate Indonesia’s hardline tactics. However, deeper structural challenges, including regulatory complexity, weak institutions, and a shortage of skilled labor, remain unaddressed. Without tackling these core issues, Indonesia risks alienating investors and missing its goal of becoming a genuine high-tech manufacturing powerhouse.
