Indonesia may no longer be able to remain a spectator of the ever-escalating global trade war with the country now on the radar of the United States government, which under the administration of President Donald Trump is seeking to reduce its deficits with its trade partners. Indonesia was preparing for heightened trade barriers in the United States as the world’s biggest economy steps up its fight against a trade deficit and enforces what it claims to be fair trade, The Straits Times reported in March. Trump has warned that he may revoke special trade tariffs for Indonesia, especially on textiles, in a bid to reduce his country’s trade deficit. Indonesia exported textile products, both knitted and unknitted, worth a total of $4.12 billion to the United States last year.
