The Indonesian government “warmly welcomes” the decision by Spain, Ireland, and Norway to formally recognize a Palestinian state, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Tuesday. Retno, who was in Brussels to attend a ministerial meeting discussing the two-state solution for the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, met in person with her counterparts from the three Western European countries to express the Indonesian government’s appreciation for the decision. “I congratulate and appreciate Spain, Ireland, and Norway for their decision to recognize the State of Palestine,” Retno wrote on her X account. During the ministerial meeting, Indonesia made appeals to European countries to push for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and to recognize the State of Palestine and its full membership at the UN. She also met with Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Mustafa in Brussels to reiterate “Indonesia’s steadfast support in defending justice and humanity for all Palestinians” and discuss the international recognition of a Palestinian state. At the same time, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell threw his weight behind the International Criminal Court, whose prosecutor is seeking an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others, including leaders of the Hamas militant group. The formal declaration and resulting diplomatic dispute come more than seven months into an assault waged by Israel following the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack in which militants stormed across the Gaza border into Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostage. Israel’s air and land attacks have killed 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between combatants and civilians.
