President Prabowo Subianto is set to travel to Egypt for a Gaza summit to be led by his American counterpart, Donald Trump. Trump, alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, will chair the summit in the resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday local time. The conference, which will invite other world leaders, will discuss Trump’s proposal to end Israel’s two-year war in Gaza. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is also expected to attend. “The invitation is indeed quite sudden, but they really requested Prabowo’s attendance for the continuity of the [Gaza] talks. Hopefully, this will bring peace to Palestine, particularly in Gaza,” Prasetyo told reporters in Jakarta on Sunday night. Prasetyo neither confirmed nor denied whether Prabowo would once again offer to deploy peacekeeping troops to Gaza — a plan he had pitched at the United Nations General Assembly not long ago. “If they reach a constructive agreement, there is a possibility [for that]. Mr. President, too, had said that if things go well, especially if there is peace, what this might lead to is us sending the peacekeepers,” Prasetyo said. Prabowo had instructed the Indonesian Armed Forces to prepare for possible peacekeeping missions, according to the state secretary. Indonesia is the fifth-largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping operations. Southeast Asia’s biggest economy deployed a total of 2,762 uniformed personnel as of late August.
