More than 1,200 people are now known to have died in the quake-tsunami that smashed into Sulawesi, Indonesia said Tuesday, as police pledged to clamp down on looting by survivors taking advantage of the chaos, Channel News Asia reports. A total picture of the destruction from last week’s earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia remains unclear. Quoting the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, NPR reports that up to 1.6 million people may have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Meanwhile, two shallow earthquakes have occurred near the eastern Indonesian island of Sumba, about 1,600 kilometres from the area heavily damaged by the Friday’s earthquakes, but no tsunami warning was issued, according to Associated Press.
