India’s federal police Tuesday raided the local offices of budget carrier AirAsia as investigators accused the airline’s boss Tony Fernandes of illegally obtaining licences. The charges laid out by the Central Bureau of Investigation allege Fernandes and others bribed Indian officials through middlemen to influence policies, including obtaining a flying permit and approvals to fly internationally, the official said. AirAsia India said in a statement it refuted any allegations of wrongdoing and was co-operating with all regulators and agencies “to present the correct facts”. India’s move against Fernandes came after he apologised on Sunday for a controversial stunt endorsing scandal-tainted prime minister at the time Najib Razak before Malaysia’s general election, in which he suffered a stunning defeat.
