Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that the democratic process in Cambodia will continue unabated, noting that the national election will not be postponed or cancelled as it has been in other countries. United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Rhona Smith urged Cambodia earlier this month to drop a ban on the country’s main opposition party so it can take part in a July general election. Former opposition leader Kem Sokha is to remain in jail while awaiting his trial after the Appeal Court on Tuesday (Mar 27) upheld the decision of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to extend his pre-trial detention by an additional six months.
