Facebook has removed the page of a Myanmar monk once dubbed the “Buddhist Bin Laden” for his incendiary posts about Muslims, the company confirmed, as it faces pressure to clamp down on hate speech. The saffron-robed 45-year-old Wirathu regularly shares his hate-filled rants through DVD and social media, in which he warns against Muslims who “target innocent young Burmese girls and rape them”, and “indulge in cronyism”. Tensions between the Rohingya, a Muslim minority that is de facto stateless, and majority-Buddhist Myanmar came to a peak last year after an August attack on police and army posts in Rakhine by rebels from the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Army (ARSA). Since then, the Myanmar army has launched an unprecedented attack on civilians.
