Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte could step down if the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos succeeds in overturning his 2016 vice-presidential election defeat, Reuters reported on Thursday, quoting Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque. During a dinner with the Association of Philippine Broadcasters on Tuesday, Duterte said that he would step down if a leader “like” Senator Francis Escudero or former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr could assume the presidency. Duterte is known for his admiration of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whom he lauded as the “most enterprising” Filipino president. According to an estimate by the Philippine Supreme Court, Marcos had amassed up to $10bn during his rule as president from 1965 to 1986.
