Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday he “did not give a s***” as his government moved to shut down a news website that has been critical in its reporting on his deadly drug war, with media watchdogs raising fears over eroding freedoms. Duterte referred to Rappler as a “fake news outlet” as he ranted about a recent article published on the site about his aide, Special Assistant to the President Bong Go. Philippines’ Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revoked Rappler’s permit on Jan. 11 over violation of constitutional restrictions on ownership and control of mass media entities because of funds coming from Omidyar Network, a fund created by eBay founder and entrepreneur Pierre Omidyar.
