Chinese authorities implemented a series of tight restrictions on rural communities to limit the spread of COVID-19. These were characterized by a grid governance system where communities were divided up and put under close surveillance. Government officials, community workers and volunteers were assigned to managing individual grids. The government extended its reach to the grassroots level and effectively limited the spread of COVID-19 in many parts of rural China.
