Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that negotiations on the country’s China-backed East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project are still ongoing, although there is no time frame for when talks will wind up, South China Morning Post reports. The project was first approved by the previous government on Oct 21, 2016. However, the new government under Mahathir has shelved the project, saying it was overpriced and not economically feasible. According to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, the Government will be able to recover RM10 billion (US$2.4 billion) in the event that the railway project is scrapped.
