Cambodia released 14 government critics on Tuesday, in a move by Prime Minister Hun Sen that some observers say is aimed at appeasing foreign criticism of a flawed general election last month, Channel News Asia reports. The detainees, who are all members or supporters of Cambodia’s now dissolved main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), were released from Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar prison. They were arrested for insurrection for their role in the July 2014 demonstration in Freedom Park, Phnom Penh, one in a series by the CNRP to protest election manipulation and restriction on peaceful assembly. The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won the general election last month, a victory that is seen as a “sham” by analysts after months-long crackdown on the opposition and the press.
