Vietnam’s motorbike market expanded 14.9% last year, the largest growth rate in Southeast Asia, partly driven by the surge in electric bike sales. The country saw 3.4 million units sold, second highest in the region behind Indonesia at 6.5 million, according to research company Motorcycles Data. This means Vietnam was the fourth largest motorbike market globally, and third largest electric motorbike market. Investment in electric two-wheelers by domestic manufacturers and major Chinese companies is reshaping the market, the researcher said. At the same time, growth is unfolding in a more mature market marked by selective consumer demand and strong brand loyalty, particularly toward Honda. Electric vehicle adoption is gaining pace amid tightening environmental policies. The announcement by Hanoi authorities of a ban on internal combustion engine vehicles from July 2026 has sent a strong signal and is hastening the shift toward electrification. Traditional manufacturers are facing mounting pressure from electric scooter specialists. Honda, the market leader for more than 70 years, recorded modest growth of 1.3%, while long-time rival Yamaha fell 17.3%, losing its second-place position.
