Myanmar authorities are currently detaining multiple foreign nationals, including Vietnamese citizens, following a crackdown on online scam operations along the Thailand-Myanmar border, spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said. “We are still verifying the exact number,” Hang said at the ministry’s press conference on Thursday. According to the spokeswoman, the ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Public Security on the case and has instructed Vietnam’s diplomatic missions in Thailand and Myanmar to cooperate with local authorities in identifying the rescued individuals and carrying out necessary citizen protection measures.

Regarding Vietnam’s cooperation with neighboring countries in combating scam networks along shared borderlines, Hang said that Vietnamese authorities have been collaborating with their counterparts to investigate and prosecute Vietnamese citizens involved in criminal activities abroad in accordance with laws of both Vietnam and host countries. “We believe that all legal violations must be dealt with in line with the law. Vietnamese authorities have been, are, and will continue to closely monitor the situation, ensuring necessary and timely consular protection measures for Vietnamese citizens who are victims in such cases,” she stated.
