Large-scale industrial activities, trash overload and sidewalk paving are among major contributors to worsening air quality in Hanoi, environment officials said.

Monitoring results recorded at 35 stations in Hanoi from Dec. 29 to Jan. 5 showed the air quality index (AQI) had dropped from bad to worse, according to the city’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment. An AQI level above 100 is considered polluted or unhealthy for humans. Children, seniors and individuals with respiratory and heart diseases are recommended to avoid sustained and high-intensity outdoor exercises when AQI levels reach 150 or above.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, the air quality index reached 163 downtown, a level requiring the elderly and those with heart and respiratory ailments in the area to stay indoors.
